Bring Back the Fun, Laughter & Enjoyment into Your Midlife Years!

Bring Back the Fun, Laughter & Enjoyment into Your Midlife Years!

We spend so much of our lives chasing the dream but not enjoying the journey.

We work long hours, we seem to be busy, busy, busy all the time trying to get all the things done.

We focus on the finances, the household duties, the work responsibilities, the health issues, trying to juggle them all and hoping we don’t lose our tentative grip on any of them.

We worry, we stress, our anxiety levels skyrocket.

Add to this all the trouble that goes on the world, then is it any wonder that we’ve forgotten how to have fun, how to laugh, how to enjoy our lives?

Plus, to do so without feeling guilty because yes there are not so great things happening in the world, and yes other people, perhaps even yourself, are having a hard time.

Having fun, laughter and enjoyment as an adult seems to be a dream, a hope, a fantasy, somewhere far down on the to-do list. That’s if it’s even on it at all.

Midlife also brings with it, its own challenges and worries, which only reduce the remote possibility of having these fun, laughter and enjoyment ‘things’ in our lives.

The decline of our fertility and the associated hormonal fluctuations – you may well want to have some fun, laughter and enjoyment but it feels like your hormones are forbidding you from doing so!

Ageing parents and the worry of, not only how you’re going to perhaps need to look after them, but also how it affects you emotionally. They’ve always been there to look after you and now the tables have turned.

Perhaps you have children who are now reaching adulthood and you’re left with an empty nest. Something that you secretly looked forward to but now you’re not too sure what to do with it.

You may find yourself single again in midlife, in a new work role, or struggling to keep up with all the changes happening.

Then there is the concern of you yourself getting older and the changes that brings with it.

So, with all this on your plate how can you be expected to have fun, to laugh, to enjoy your life?!

Remember, we weren’t put on this earth to not enjoy our lives.

We weren’t put here to not embrace the journey of life, from young to old and all the way through the middle!

These midlife years can be amongst our best if we really want them to be. Having fun, laughter and enjoyment as an integral part of them can only enhance and make them better.

Plus, do you know how many benefits there are from having fun, laughter and enjoyment in your life?

There are so many!

Fun, laughter and enjoyment can be the greatest (and cheapest!) therapy practices that you can have.

Your health will improve in a whole myriad of ways including being better able to navigate your way through the peri-menopausal, menopausal years and beyond!

Better sleep and going to sleep feeling a sense of contentment.

Waking up refreshed and excited to get going with your day.

Less stress, tension and worry – you’re too busy having fun and enjoying your life!

Improved memory and ability to function, less of that brain fog!

Increase in energy levels and a return of your zest for life.

Being able to thrive in your life, not just survive it!

So, how can you bring back more fun, enjoyment and laughter into your life?

1: Be intentional – what do you need to do to have more fun, laughter and enjoyment in your life?

Are there changes you need to make? To yourself, your home, your social life, your whole life and how you’re currently living it?

2: Make it a mission to have more fun in your life.

What do you enjoy doing? Do more of it. Find a way to do so.

3: Make it a must-do to have more laughter in your life.

What makes you laugh. Do more of it. Find ways to do so.

4: Make it a priority to enjoy your life, whatever it may throw at you.

What do you enjoy in your life? Do more of it. Find ways to do so.

5: Ask yourself, what stops you from enjoying your life?

Can you change this? If so, how and start making the changes.

6: Be spontaneous – don’t put off things just because they don’t seem to be serious, or have a purpose, or fit in with what you think you’re expected to do.

Just do it!

7: Make the time!

Make the time to have fun, make the time to laugh, make the time to enjoy.

8: Check in With Your Mindset

How do you feel about having fun, laughter and enjoyment as part of your life? Do you say you want it but then not do anything to make sure it’s included?

Remember you need to be intentional about having fun, laughing and enjoying. It sounds counterintuitive but, with so many other things fighting for our time and energy, we do need to make the conscious effort to include them all.

9: Be Present & Grateful

So much of the joy in life is taken away by us not being present in the moment of what we are doing. Whatever you are doing, wherever you are, be present. If you need to switch off electronics do so, if you need to let people know you’re not available, do so.

Do whatever you need to do to be present, to focus, to enjoy that moment for what it is and to be thankful that you get to experience it.

10: Avoid Setting Expectations

We often put too much emphasis on setting expectations and then feeling let down because something, or someone, didn’t live up to the expectations that we created. We think we ‘should’ feel a certain way, we let our fun, laughter and enjoyment be taken away because of unexpected challenges that may show up.

We may not be able to control these, but we can control our reaction, our response and whether we’re going to let these things we can’t control affect our ability to have fun, to laugh, to enjoy.

Fun, laughter and enjoyment are essential, crucial, vital, important parts of your life. Make sure that you treat them as such and include them, as a top priority, in everything that you do!
